A moment of thanks

8 Apr 2022

The final phase of the construction works at our Ghent Logistic Campus in Ghent, Evergem, started on Wednesday, 6 April: Willy Naessens Industriebouw installed the last concrete wall panel, which was celebrated with a moment of thanks together with all partners on the building site.

150,000m² of distribution and storage warehouses

We started building a state-of-the-art and future-proof logistics site with 150,000 m² of distribution and storage warehouses at the Rieme-Noord industrial estate, a multimodal location in the heart of the Ghent part of the North Sea Port area, in June 2020, right in the midst of the Covid pandemic. The North Sea Port is the 60-kilometre-long cross-border port area stretching from Vlissingen in the Netherlands on the North Sea to Ghent – 32 kilometres inland in Belgium.

Already prepared for second life

The logistics campus meets the high BREEAM standards for sustainability and innovation in virtually all areas – including advanced waste management, green energy, water recovery, and employee welfare. But that’s not all. It was also designed according to the ‘second life’ principle, whereby thought was given from the outset to its possible reuse for other customers and logistical processes. In the philosophy of Heylen Warehouses, buildings must not only meet today’s requirements, but also those of the future.

Flexibility with the campus model

The whole complex is modular: All units can be used completely independently, but can also be linked together perfectly, depending on the needs of the users.  Thanks to our campus model, future growth and shrinkage can be catered for flexibly within the contours of the campus without always needing to realise new buildings and leave behind a trail of empty buildings.

Green energy

Each logistics unit will be equipped with electric car charging stations. The green fuel for the charging infrastructure is generated by the solar panels installed on the entire roof of Ghent Logistic Campus. The generated power of this solar roof represents an equivalent of the annual energy needs of no less than 1,700 Flemish families.
