Herentals, May 9, 2025 – Heylen Warehouses is currently developing Lidl’s most sustainable distribution center in Belgium. Strategically located along the E313 in Herentals, the new building will offer an impressive 43,000 m² of logistics space and stands out for its exceptional energy efficiency, future-proof design, and sustainability.
Construction is well underway and marks an important milestone in the collaboration between Lidl Belgium & Luxembourg and Heylen Warehouses. “We’re proud to be delivering this forward-looking project for Lidl – a company that, like us, places sustainability at the heart of its strategy,” says Philippe Deschilder, CEO at Heylen Warehouses. “This building will serve as a reference for the logistics real estate of tomorrow.”
The design of the distribution center was created by Architeam, with a strong focus on durability, functionality, and architectural integration. The project is backed by investors Molenwater Group and Heylen Group, both long-term partners with a proven track record in sustainable development.
Strict standards
The logistics center will be built according to the strict BREEAM Outstanding standards – the highest international benchmark for sustainable buildings. Less than 1% of new construction projects achieve this rating. This means the design performs exceptionally well in areas such as energy efficiency, water management, and material use.
Press event
On Friday, May 9, Lidl and Heylen Warehouses hosted a successful press event on site to highlight the project and provide more insight into the innovative techniques and sustainable solutions being implemented. Among the attendees were Jan Bertels, Mayor of Herentals, and provincial deputy Luk Lemmens.
Employment opportunities
The new logistics center will bring a significant boost in employment for the region, offering residents of Herentals and surrounding municipalities new opportunities to work close to home.
“Seeing this site once again buzzing with activity is truly encouraging. This project creates employment for a wide range of people, with diverse profiles and talents. What’s more, it’s being developed in a thoughtful and sustainable way, with respect for the local community and surrounding environment. For Herentals, this is an investment that pays off economically, socially, and societally,” says Jan Bertels, Mayor of Herentals.
“This project demonstrates how economic growth and sustainable land use can go hand in hand. As a province, we support initiatives that not only boost employment but also reflect forward-looking and climate-conscious entrepreneurship,” adds provincial deputy Luk Lemmens.
A vital logistics hub
From 2027 onward, the new distribution center will become a vital logistics hub for supplying Lidl stores throughout the greater Antwerp region. The project forms part of Lidl’s broader ambition to strengthen its footprint in Belgium and support its continued growth in the market.
The distribution center in Herentals is a textbook example of how high ambitions in sustainability can be translated into concrete, high-quality infrastructure. With this project, Lidl and Heylen Warehouses reaffirm their vision for the future of logistics: green, efficient, and built to last.
